Where does the road lead? What lies beyond the horizon? ‘The Silent Road’ lies peacefully in the beautiful Twente countryside. A landscape that does not reveal its secrets; you simply have to experience it for yourself. Ton Schulten had a near-death experience. He said: ‘I was allowed to glimpse beyond the horizon for a moment; it is magnificent there’. Yet he didn’t know how to capture that image in a painting. Nor did he want to. In his view, everyone would see it in their own way and at their own time. The mystery that never left him.
